Bruins Look To Stay Hot In Florida Atlantic Invitational

Fresh from the team title at the UNLV Classic, the Bruins return to theroad this weekend, flying to Boca Raton, FL, for the Florida AtlanticInvitational. The Bruins are scheduled to face Rutgers, FloridaAtlantic, Florida International and Long Island in round-robin play.Wisconsin is also participating in the Invitational, but is notscheduled to play the Bruins in round-robin play. The Bruins remain atopthe NFCA poll, as the first regular season poll was released onWednesday, February 19.

Tairia Mims Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

Senior 1B/C Tairia Mims hit .647 (11-for-17), with a 1.471 sluggingpercentage, helping the Bruins to go 5-0 at the UNLV Tournament in LasVegas. Of her 11 hits, seven were for extra bases, including threedoubles, a triple and three home runs. She added seven runs scored andseven RBI, a sacrifice fly and a walk. Against No. 20 South Carolina,Mims went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in theBruins' 12-0 rout of the Gamecocks. In a 5-1 win against No. 4-rankedNebraska, she gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead with a two-out solo homer inthe third, and finished the game going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

UCLA vs. Florida Atlantic Tournament Opponents

Rutgers-- Friday will mark the first meeting between the Bruins andScarlet Knights. Rutgers is coached by Pat Willis and have a 1-1 recordthis season.

Florida Atlantic-- UCLA holds a 1-0 all-time record against the Owls,with a 7-3 win on Feb. 6, 2000 at the UNF/Louisville SluggerInvitational in Tampa, FL. The Owls are coached by Joan Joyce and have arecord of 5-6 this season.

Florida International-- UCLA holds a 3-0 all-time record against FIU,with the most recent contest taking place on Feb. 18, 2001, at the UNLVClassic, a 10-0 five-inning Bruin win. The Golden Panthers are coachedby Kim Gwydir and has a 4-11 record this season.

Long Island-- The Blackbirds and Bruins have never met on the softballfield. LIU is coached by Roy Kortman and has a 2003 record of 1-1 thisseason.

Wisconsin (possible opponent)-- UCLA and Wisconsin have played threetimes, all during the 2001 season with the Bruins winning all threematchups. The Badgers are coached by Karen Gallagher and have a recordof 5-3 this season.

Bruins Win UNLV Classic Title

The Bruins turned in an impressive performance at the UNLV Classic lastweekend, defeating three teams ranked in the top-20 of the NFCA/USAToday poll en route to the UNLV Classic title. UCLA was the onlyundefeated team in tournament play. Tairia Mims led the Bruinsoffensively (see above), while Keira Goerl allowed just one run in 24innings in the circle, striking out 25 and holding opposing batters to a.100 batting average. The Bruins had production from every spot in thebatting order, as every player that started a game at the UNLV Classichad at least one RBI, and eight of the nine had at least one extra-basehit. Freshman Emily Zaplatosch joined Mims over .600 for the weekend,hitting .615 (8-for-13) with a double, a home run, two RBIs and threeruns scored. She had a .923 slugging percentage for the tournament, anda 1.000 FLD%.

Next Week in Bruin Softball

The Bruins return home next weekend for the UCLA Tournament, featuringBoston College, Missouri, and UCLA. There will be three games on Friday,three on Saturday and two on Sunday in the double round-robintournament. Sunday's games will be a third-place and championship game.
