Bruins Upset Golden Bears

LOS ANGELES - Dijon Thompson rebounded his own missed shot and scoredwith 6 seconds remaining in overtime to lift UCLA over No. 18 California 76-75Thursday night, snapping the Bruins' 10-game Pac-10 losing streak.

After Cal's Amit Tamir missed, the Bruins grabbed the rebound as time ranout. Students mobbed the court in celebration of the Bruins ending aneight-game losing streak at Pauley Pavilion, where they played their 600th gamein the building's history.

Thompson had 20 points and 11 rebounds for UCLA, which trailed 75-72 earlyin overtime after Joe Shipp hit a 3-pointer for Cal. Jason Kapono, who was heldto 10 points, hit two free throws to pull the Bruins within one.

Ray Young, who had 18 points starting in place of injured guard CedricBozeman, got fouled with 37 seconds left, but missed both as the crowd groanedloudly.

Thompson put up a shot that went in and out with 10 seconds left, and in amad scramble he grabbed his own rebound and scored the game-winning jumper.

The Bruins (6-16, 3-10 Pac-10) shot 56 percent in the second half, when theyblew all of a 13-point lead.

Brian Wethers scored 21 points and Shipp added 18 for the Bears (18-5,11-3), who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

UCLA's hot shooting continued at the start of the second half. The Bruinsmade their first eight shots, including three 3-pointers by Thompson and Young,for a 57-44 lead. Kapono's missed 3-pointer at 14:52 finally ended the shootingstreak.

The Bears regained their scoring behind Shipp and Wethers, who combined for14 of Cal's next 19 points as the Bears pulled to 67-63 with 7:11 remaining.Shipp, Wethers and Richard Midgley hit 3-pointers in the spurt that saw theBruins cool off and commit turnovers.

Ryan Walcott turned the ball over, leading to Wethers' inside basket, thenKapono fouled Wethers on a 3-point attempt. Wethers made two of three to tiethe game at 67 with 4:24 left.

The teams traded baskets and were tied at 69. T.J. Cummings' pass inside gottipped by Wethers for a turnover, but Tamir missed. Young got fouled and madeone of two to put UCLA ahead 70-69 with 1:39 left.

Tamir hit a 3-pointer to give Cal its first lead of the second half, 72-70.Cummings scored off a rebound of Kapono's missed 3-pointer to tie it with 32seconds remaining. Wethers missed a bank shot, then Kapono put up a running3-point attempt that Thompson barely missed tipping in before the regulationbuzzer. Kapono didn't score in the second half.
