Feb. 20, 2003
Five first-time honorees comprise the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VIII men's basketball team, released Wednesday. They are Jason Blair of San Diego, Trace Caton of Utah, Carl English of Hawaii, Shawn Redhage of Arizona State and Blake Stepp of Gonzaga.
The team was voted on by CoSIDA members from within the District VIII states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, and the provinces of British Columbia and Yukon. The all-district selections advance to the national ballot; the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America team will be announced March 6.
Redhage, a senior from Lincoln, Neb., was selected to the team after earning a 3.61 grade point average in pursuit of a degree in Construction Science. He is averaging 7.3 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per game this season and has reached double-digits in scoring seven times this year. Redhage is the second Sun Devil to earn the honor, as Bobby Lazor earned All-District in 1997-1998 and 1998-1999.
SIXTH-MAN SPECIAL: Senior Shawn Redhage posted one of the best performances off the bench in all of college basketball this season on Feb. 8 at Washington in ASU's 79-77 overtime win. Redhage had a career-high 29 points (8-of-11) from the floor, and also had career highs in free throws made (11) and attempted (18). The construction science major with a 3.61 grade point average and two-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection posted season highs in rebounds (eight, but since topped with 12 vs. USC), assists (five) and minutes (34).
On Feb. 13 against USC, Redhage had 16 points (including 8-of-9 from the free throw line) and matched his career-high with 12 rebounds for the second double-double of his career. Redhage now has seven double-figure scoring games this year after having three all of last year. Redhage matched the ASU freshman record with 28 starts in 1999-2000 but is now coming off the bench and has posted double digits in four of the past seven games. His 29 points is the most by a Sun Devil off the bench since at least the 1979-80 season. He is 42-of-81 (.519) from the field in the past 16 games.
