Anna Blue Sets School 3k Record at MSPF Indoor Track Championships

Feb. 21, 2003

NAMPA, Idaho -- Washington State senior Anna Blue ran a school indoor record 3000m time of 9 minutes, 42.22 seconds for second place at the first day's competition of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at the Idaho Center in Nampa.

Blue, from Olympia, Wash., bettered her lifetime-best time by over four seconds and surpassed Cheryl Livingstone's 1985 record time of 9:44.83. Blue's eight points gave the Cougar women's team a total of 13 points for fourth place. UCLA has a commanding lead with 52.5 points followed by Stanford's 35.5 points after the first day's four final events.

UCLA also leads in the men's team tally with 31 points after four events. The WSU men totaled 18 points for sixth place but are a mere three points from second place Stanford.

Sophomore Danny Wolf (Reno, Nev.) finished third in the men's 3000m but his valiant effort at the end of the race landed him on crutches. Wolf, the 2002 MPSF 3k champion, made a move to pass Stanford's Louis Luchini for the lead down the backstretch of the next to the last lap but the Stanford junior held him off. With 200 meters to go on the bell lap, Luchini picked up the pace and Wolf tried to move up again but felt something pop in his calf and couldn't hold pace. Luchini won in 8:12.21 and Arizona's Robert Cheseret caught Wolf at the line for second place. Wolf will not be able to run in the Cougar's distance medley relay and will be replaced by freshman Reid Carrell (Spokane) who finished 18th in the 3k with a PR of 8:46.20.

Other Cougar women scoring points Friday included Brittany Hinchcliffe (Olympia, Wash.) with fifth place in the weight throw with a PR toss of 18.12m/59-5 1/2, and Blessing Ufodiama (Long Beach, Calif.) with an eighth place finish in the long jump (5.46m/17-11).

In women's prelim action, Ellannee Richardson (Gladstone, Ore.) ran a PR in the 60m hurdles of 8.45, which was the third-best time in the prelim heats. She will also race in the 200m dash after posting the second-fastest time Friday of 24.25. Tiffany Giles (Seattle) will run in the 200m and 400m finals Saturday. Freshman Diana Pickler (Sachse, Texas) also advanced to the 60m hurdles final.

Cougar men adding to the team total included Kurtiss Dilley (Elverta, Calif.) with fourth place in the high jump (2.10m/6-10 3/4); Martin Boston (Hayward, Calif.) finished fourth in the long jump (7.17m/23-6 1/4) while fellow freshman James McSwain (Las Vegas, Nev.) placed eighth (6.75m/22-1 3/4); and Tim Gehring (Kettle Falls, Wash.) finished eighth in the shot put (17.56m/57-7 1/2).

In men's prelims, Bennie Chatman (Houston, Texas) ran the top time along with UCLA's Matt Bruno in the 60m dash (6.83) and Anthony Buchanan (Spokane) had the next best time (6.85). The story was not the same in the 200m dash as both struggled and did not qualify for finals. Buchanan, coming in the MPSF Championships with limited training after breaking his toe two months ago, pulled up and did not qualify in the 200m. His ability to run the 60m final will be reevaluated Saturday prior to the race. Justin Ireland (Issaquah, Wash.) qualified for the 800m final with a time of 1:53.53.

Saturday's events begin at 9 a.m. at Jacksons Track.
