No. 25 Cal Baseball Falls to No. 8 Long Beach State, 1-0

Feb. 21, 2003

LONG BEACH, CA - Despite a stellar pitching performance from junior right-hander Matt Brown, the No. 25 ranked Cal baseball team fell to No. 8 ranked Long Beach State, 1-0, Friday night at Blair Field in Long Beach. The Bears, who out-hit the 49ers six hits to three, fell to 9-4 overall, while Long Beach State improved to 7-3.

The 49ers scored their only run off of Brown in the second inning when a two-out error by Cal third baseman Jeff Dragicevich allowed Chris Hansen to score from third base. Hansen had led off the second with a bloop single to right and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brown (1-1) went on to pitch a season-high 7.0 innings with three hits, two walks and four strikeouts. The winning pitcher for Long Beach State was starter Abe Alvarez, who improved his record to 4-0 by pitching 5.7 innings with four hits, one walk and six strikeouts. Carlos Muniz earned his first save of the year by getting David Nicholson to fly out to deep left with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth.

Cal had six hits, including two hits apiece by sophomore first baseman James Holder and freshman center fielder Jeremy Burchett. Holder also had two doubles, while Burchett had a clutch two-out double in the top of the ninth. On the night, the Bears left 10 runners on base, eight of those runners in scoring position.

Cal will next face Long Beach State in the second game of the three-game series, Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. at Blair Field.
