No. 6 Florida Hands No. 4 Cal First Loss of Season

Feb. 21, 2003

Louisville, KY - The California men's tennis team (6-1) suffered its first defeat of the season this afternoon Feb. 21, at the hands of the sixth-ranked Florida Gators, 4-2, in a quarterfinal match of the USTA/ITA National Men's Indoor Team Championships taking place at the Louisville Tennis Club in Louisville, KY.

Though the Gators have two doubles tandems ranked in the Top 40 in the nation, the unranked Bears' doubles teams took two of the three matches to capture the early doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. Patrick Briaud and Balazs Veress continue to impress, taking an 8-6 victory over the No. 37 pair of Olivier Levant and Eleazar Magallan, to stay undefeated on the season. The duo has compiled a 7-0 record through the squad's first seven matches and is 8-1 on the year. Steve Berke and Robert Kowalczyk also came out on top, defeating McDonald/Mirzadeh, 8-5, to solidify the doubles point for the Bears.

On the singles courts, Cal dropped the first two matches as No. 95 Wayne Wong and Or Dekel both lost in straight sets to give Florida its first lead of the match, 2-1. But Cal's Mik Ledvonova continued his winning ways, finishing next on court No. 6 with his 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Magallan to tie the match at two apiece. The victory was Ledvonova's seventh straight as he has gone undefeated in dual play, completing a 3-0 record on court five and 4-0 on court six. Berke was the next to walk off the court, but this time with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Levant to give the Gators a one-point advantage. Cal's top-ranked player, No. 31 Conor Niland, could not pull out any heroics on this day, giving up the clincher to Janne Homia, 6-3, 6-3, and a Florida victory.Veress and Hamid Mirzadeh did not finish on court No. 1 since the Florida had already won the match.

The Bears return to action tomorrow, Feb. 21 in a consolation matchup with No. 8 Duke at 12:30 p.m. (EST). The winner of that match finishes the tournament tied for fifth place.Check out all of the tournament action at
