Feb. 22, 2003
BOCA RATON, FL - UCLA defeated Florida International by a score of 3-0 and followed with a 7-0 victory over Long Island on Saturday evening on the second day of the FAU Worth Invitational in Boca Raton, FL. Michelle Turner improved to 4-0 on the season with a complete game shutout in the opener against FIU, while Keira Goerl pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out eight of Long Island's nine batters and finishing with 10 strikeouts in the game. UCLA improves to 14-1 with the victory, and is scheduled to face Rutgers at 1 pm ET on Sunday in the championship game of the FAU Worth Invitational.
Against FIU, the Bruins opened their scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a one-out double by Monique Mejia, who scored on an RBI single by Tairia Mims. UCLA opened the lead to 3-0 in the third inning on a two-RBI single by Claire Sua, scoring Monique Mejia and Stephanie Ramos.
That was all the scoring that freshman pitcher Michelle Turner would need, as she struck out four and scattered three hits for the shutout, while improving her record to 4-0 on the season.
In the nightcap against Long Island, Keira Goerl opened the game by striking out the side on nine pitches and the Bruins answered offensively in the bottom of the first, as Monique Mejia singled to left field, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Stephanie Ramos and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tairia Mims.
UCLA extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Mims lined a one-out double down the right field line and scored on a deep single by Claire Sua.
Goerl did not give up the first hit of the game until the fifth inning, when a Kathy Waddilove slap hit dribbled down the third base line and stopped moving before it could be fielded by Toria Auelua. Waddilove was the only Blackbird that did not strike out in the game.
The Bruins added five runs in the sixth inning as the team batted around. Stephanie Ramos started the rally for UCLA with a lead off single to right field, followed by a double off the wall by Tairia Mims. An intentional walk to Claire Sua loaded the bases for Toria Auelua, who earned an RBI despite grounding out. Emily Zaplatosch then walked to re-load the bases, and was replaced by pinch runner Julie Hoshizaki. Andrea Duran scored Mims on an RBI single, and UCLA's final three runs were scored with two outs on a Natasha Watley triple to left field, scoring Hoshizaki, Duran and Caitlin Benyi.
Keira Goerl was impressive in the circle, pitching a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters in the game.
There is a strong chance of rain in the Boca Raton area on Sunday, but if the Championship Game of the FAU Worth Invitational can be played, it will feature the 14-1 Bruins against Rutgers, a team that UCLA defeated 8-1 on Friday afternoon in its first Tournament game.
