No. 18 Softball Falls At The Hands Of No. 25 Massachusetts

COLUMBUS, GA. - The No. 18 Oregon State softball squad closed out their first round game of the NFCA Lead-Off Classic on Saturday, falling to the 25th ranked UMass Minutewomen 7-1. The game was halted in the top of the sixth inning Friday due to rain.
The Beavers (11-5) struggled offensively, recording just four hits in the contest. Oregon State's lone run came in the first inning when lead-off hitter Kelly Petersen pounded a double and was brought home two batters later on a fielders choice.
The Minutewomen (3-3) gathered momentum early by scoring all seven runs in the first three innings. Senior Emily Robustelli gave UMass its first run of the day when she lead off the game with a one-run shot over the center field wall. Moments later UMass pitcher Kaila Holtz delivered a RBI scoring single, sending Hilary Puglia across the plate for what proved to be the winning run. Umass went on to record ten hits on the day.
Petersen recorded two doubles and a run scored on the day. Senior Steph Adams was the only other OSU player to record an extra base hit, adding a double in the fourth frame.
Monica Hoffman (9-4) recorded the loss in the circle for the Beavers, while Umass pitcher Kaila Holtz allowed just four hits en route to the victory. Amy Klever replaced Hoffman on the mound in the top of the second, Hoffman reentered in the third to close out the game.
The Beavers will look to rebound from the loss later in the day when they take on No. 11 Florida State at 4 p.m. PST, and on Sunday when they face No. 20 Pacific 8 a.m PST.
