Women Of Troy Suffer 60-50 Loss At Cal

Feb. 22, 2003

BERKELEY, Calif. -- USC's recent surge through the Pac-10 turned into a slump on Saturday as the women's basketball team lost its third-straight with a 60-50 defeat at California in front of 1,519 at Haas Pavilion. With the loss, the Women of Troy fall to 12-15 overall and 7-9 in the Pac-10, while the Bears improve to 9-16, 5-11 in conference play.

USC was outplayed in the second half after entering halftime with a 29-26 lead. Cal allowed the Women of Troy to score the first two baskets coming out of the break, then embarked on a 20-6 run that put them ahead 46-36 with 11:46 left in the game. USC could not get a shot to fall and got no closer than six points (46-40 at 10:38) in the remaining minutes.

It was a tale of two halves as the Trojans managed to get off to a great start thanks to Ebony Hoffman's 12 first-half points. But despite trailing by as much as six, twice in the first 20 minutes, the Bears never seemed far behind and eventually made up for it in the second period.

Hoffman led the Women of Troy with 16 points, while Berkeley-native Aisha Hollans led with eight rebounds in addition to 14 points. USC posted a 33.9 field goal percentage in the game and Cal shot 41.4 percent thanks to a 44.8 effort in the second half. The Bears outrebounded the Trojans, 42 to 35.

USC returns home this week for its final two home games of the 2003 season. The Women of Troy face Oregon on Thursday, Feb. 27, then take on Oregon State on Saturday, Feb. 29.
