No. 18 Softball Picks Up Two Big Wins At NFCA Classic
Feb. 23, 2003
COLUMBUS, GA - The No. 18 Oregon State softball team closed out the NFCA Lead-Off Classic with a pair of victories on Sunday morning. The Beavers topped No. 11 Florida State, 2-0 to open the day and then rallied past No. 20 Pacific by a score of 4-2.
The victories were the first for the Beavers (13-5) against ranked opponents this season.
OSU started the day against the Seminoles, finishing the contest that had started the night before with Oregon State holding a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.
The Beavers got on the board in the first inning when Shelly Prochaska hit a two-out single up the middle to score Clare Burnum. Prochaska eventually scored an insurance run for OSU after Steph Adams singled up the middle in the fourth.
Junior hurler Monica Hoffman shutdown the high-powered Florida State offense, striking out five en route to the complete game victory.
'Monica threw a great game,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'It was one of the best games she's thrown this year. She really shutdown a great hitting team.'
Burnum went 3-for-4 and had the only extra-base hit of the contest with a double. Prochaska finished 1-for-2 from the plate with an RBI and run scored.
'We did a nice job putting the ball in play and taking advantage of runners we had on base,' said Walker.
In the second game, Oregon State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning behind a two-out 2-RBI single from freshman Adrienne Alo. Pacific answered with two runs in the fourth inning to knot the score.
The Beavers rallied back in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking advantage of two hits and an error to score two more runs. Alo scored what proved to be the game-winner when Kelly Petersen reached base on a fielder's choice.
'We had some clutch hits with runners in scoring position,' said Walker. 'We played very solid and probably played our best defense of the year.'
Hoffman allowed just two hits and improved to 11-4 on the season with the complete game victory.
Alo went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
'Overall it was two very solid wins against ranked opponents,' said Walker. 'Hopefully we'll take that momentum into next week.'
