Feb. 23, 2003
HOUSTON, Tex. - The 25th-ranked University of Oregon softball team used a balanced attack to defeat Kentucky, 5-1, in its third game of the Houston Invitational in Houston, Tex., Sunday morning. The Ducks improved to 12-4 overall this season while the Wildcats dropped to 6-8. Oregon has now won three-straight at the tournament heading into its final game versus Texas San-Antonio.
'I thought we did a nice job of putting together our offense and our defense,' Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. 'Amy [Harris] did a great job pitching and offensively we hit the ball well when we needed to.'
Kentucky third baseman Ingrid Lochelt hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead, but Oregon's defense did not allow another run. Harris improved to 4-2 this season and finished the game tying a career-high with eight strikeouts.
Freshman Beth Boskovich led the Ducks offensively, finishing the game 2-for-4 with a home run, a single and two RBI. It was Boskovich's fourth multiple hit game of the season and her second career home run.
Oregon loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third inning after Lynsey Haij and Jenn Poore walked and Andrea Vidlund reached on an error by Kentucky shortstop Lori Melchi. Senior Janell Bergstrom drove in Haij and Vidlund with a double to left field and Poore later scored on an error by Lochelt to give Oregon a 3-1 lead.
Boskovich extended Oregon's lead with a two-run home run deep over the center field fence, scoring freshman Jackie Eliades, who finished the game 1-for-3. It was Boskovich's second home run of the season and sixth RBI.
Kentucky loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth inning, but Harris struck out clean up hitter Jessica Nance to get out of the inning with no Kentucky runs scored.
