No. 9 Baylor Completes Sweep With 3-1 Win

Feb. 23, 2003

WACO, Tex. - Chris Durbin went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs Sunday as the No. 9 Baylor Bears completed a three-game series sweep against the No. 8 USC Trojans with a 3-1 win at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears have beaten the Trojans six games in a row after Baylor swept USC last year at Dodger Stadium. The Trojans lost the three games by a combined four runs.

With the wind blowing to right, Durbin hit the first of his two homers while leading off for the Bears in the first. Durbin hit his second of the day in the third and first baseman Ross Bennett added another run with an RBI single later in the inning.

Trey Taylor (1-1) threw six innings for the Bears to earn the victory while Zane Carlson picked up his second save in as many days with 1 1/3 innings of relief. USC freshman Bobby Paschal (0-2), throwing the first complete game by a Trojan since the 2001 season, took the loss. Paschal went eight innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

USC had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth, but center fielder Travis McAndrews and Paschal both struck out to end the Trojan threat.

The Trojans will host UC Irvine on Tuesday (Feb. 25) at 6 p.m. at Dedeaux Field before traveling to Stanford for a non-conference series, beginning on Friday (Feb. 28) at 6 p.m. All four games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on
