Feb. 24, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona shot 297 (+13) Monday in the opening round of its lone home tournament, the Wildcat Invitational, and is tied for third place with 36 holes remaining. Freshman Erica Blasberg posted the best round of the day for Arizona as she shot 2-under-par 69 to position herself in second place.

Individually, three Wildcats stand in the top 10 after the tournament's opening round. In addition to Blasberg, senior Laura Myerscough is tied for third place after she carded an even-par round of 71. Freshman Cassandra Kirkland made her collegiate debut in grand fashion Monday as she shot 1-over-par 72. Kirkland, competing as an individual, is tied for sixth place. Her score does not count toward Arizona's team total.

The highlight of the day came on the par-4 14th hole when Blasberg chipped in from 60 feet away to make birdie. After hitting her tee shot into the desert waste area to the right of the fairway, the freshman from Corona, Calif., tucked her second shot just behind the green and proceeded to sink the chip-in from the fringe into the hole located at the front edge of the green.

Holding the lead after 18 holes is Arizona State, which shot 290 (+6) to hold a four-stroke lead over Pepperdine (294, +10). The Wildcats sit seven strokes back in a tie for third place with Vanderbilt. Erin Tone of Arizona State is the individual leader after one round. Tone shot 3-under-par 68 to lead Blasberg by one stroke.

Senior Anne Lee is tied for 42nd place after she opened the tournament with a 7-over-par performance of 78. Closing out the Arizona lineup were sophomore Miriam Kraschinski and freshman Whitney Welch. Kraschinski shot 79 (+8), while Welch shot 85 (+14).

Other individuals competing for the Wildcats were senior Julia Kraschinski and redshirt freshman Katie Christy. The elder Kraschinski shot 76 (+5) and Christy, in just her second collegiate event, carded an 82 (+11).

The tournament continues Tuesday with a second-round shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Arizona has produced the individual medalist at the Wildcat Invitational the last two seasons. The team is seeking its second team title of the 2002-03 season.
