Blue-Gold Intrasquad Opens Home Meet Schedule

Feb. 25, 2003

The University of California men's and women's indoor track and field teams compete against each other this Saturday, Mar. 1 at Edwards Stadium. The Blue-Gold Intrasquad will serve as a preview of the outdoor season for Cal's 2003 squad. Admission is free for this event.

The Golden Bears did well at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships last weekend in Boise, Idaho. The men's team finished in sixth-place, while the women's squad posted a seventh-place showing.

Sophomore Toby Atawo was the only Bear to win an event, as he was victorious in the 200m, posting an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 21.26. Not only was his victory impressive, but that time is just a tenth of a second away from a qualifying time for the 2003 World Championships, set for Mar. 14-15 in Birmingham, England. He produced another solid performance in the 60m dash, placing third with a season-best time of 6.90. Freshman Teak Wilburn also posted a NCAA provisional mark with a second-place showing in the high jump (7-1.75). Junior Bruce Giron garnered a runner-up finish in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 50-1.25. The men's distance medley relay team of sophomore Carlos Carballo, senior Martin Conrad, freshman Kevin Davis and sophomore Girmay Guangul also performed well, placing fourth in 10:14.76. Rounding out Cal's top five finishes, was junior Tim Bogdanof with a fifth-place showing in the 60m hurdles in 7.99-his season-best-David Glasgow, also with a fifth-place finish in the high jump (6-10.75), and sophomore Girmay Guangul, whose performance in the 3,000m (8:22.35) earned him a fifth-place finish.

Seven individuals and both relay teams earned top 10 finishes at the MPSF Championships on the women's side. Senior Erin Belger finished fifth in the 800m in 2:11.29, after turning in the second-best time in that event's prelims. Freshman Antonette Carter placed fifth in the long jump (18-2.50) and eighth in the 60m dash (7.75). Cal's 4x400m relay team of junior Stephanie Cowling, senior Lache Bailey, junior Brooke Meredith and freshman Osarhiemen Omwanghe finished fifth after clocking a time of 3:47.91. The Bears' distance medley relay of Belger, sophomores Shannan Hawes and Lindsay Maclise, and freshman Bridget Duffy also claimed fifth with a time of 12:04.02. Omwanghe took sixth in the 60m hurdles with a season-best time of 8.56. Bailey placed seventh in the 800m (2:12.63), while Duffy also notched a seventh-place performance in the 1600m (4:58.4h). In the field events, junior Jenna Johnson was the Bears' highest-finisher in the shot put with a season-best mark of 48-9.50, while Meredith finished ninth in the long jump (17-10.25).

While the Golden Bears begin their outdoor season in Berkeley with Saturday's intrasquad meet at Edwards Stadium, they still have one remaining indoor track and field meet. Indoor competition concludes with the NCAA Indoor Championships, Mar. 14-15 in Fayetteville, AR. Cal then officially opens the spring season, hosting Boise State and Azusa Pacific on Mar. 21-22 at Edwards Stadium. Start times for those meets is at 11 a.m.
