Bruins Travel To UC-Santa Barbara

UCLA opens this week's schedule with a non-conference doubleheader at UCSanta Barbara on Wednesday at noon, before returning home to EastonStadium as they host a three-team tournament with Boston College andMissouri. The tournament will utilize a double round-robin format,culminating with a third place game at 10 am on Sunday, followed by aChampionship game at 1 pm. UCLA has won its last 14 games, dating backto a Feb. 1 loss to Cal State Fullerton at Easton Stadium during theStacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament.

Watley, Goerl Named Pac-10 Player/Pitcher of the Week
UCLA swept the Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week awards on Feb. 25,when Natasha Watley was named the Pac-10 Player of the week while herteammate Keira Goerl was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week. Watleyhit .500 (8-for-16) at the Florida Atlantic 'Worth' Invitational,including a triple, a home run, three walks, a sacrifice fly, ateam-high 10 RBIs and six stolen bases as the Bruins went 5-0 and wonthe tournament championship. She opened tournament player with a 2-for-4performance against Rutgers that included three runs scored, an RBI andthree stolen bases, then led off UCLA's game against Florida Atlanticthat evening with a lead-off home run, UCLA's first since Amanda Freedhit a lead-off home run on April 4, 2001 in the second game of adoubleheader at Cal State Northridge. In the championship game againstRutgers, Watley had a game-ending single, scoring the final two runs ofthe game and invoking the mercy rule in UCLA's 8-0 win over the ScarletKnights.

Goerl pitched three one-hit shutouts, accumulating 26 strikeouts andjust three walks during 19 innings in the circle at the FAU WorthInvitational. Against Florid Atlantic, she had nine strikeouts and justone walk, allowing one hit in the game. In Saturday's game against LongIsland, Goerl struck out eight of LIU's nine batters and finished with10 total strikeouts. In the five-inning win over Rutgers, Goerl struckout seven, finishing the weekend with a 3-0 record and a 0.00 ERA.

UCLA vs. This Week's Opponents
UC Santa Barbara-- UCLA holds a 52-2 all-time record against UCSB andswept a doubleheader against the Gauchos last year (Mar. 13) with gamescores of 7-1 and 4-0. The Gauchos are coached by Kristy Schroeder andhave a record of 15-5 this season.
Boston College-- This weekend will mark the first meeting between theBruins and Eagles. BC is coached by Jennifer Finley and has a 2003record of 3-5.
Missouri-- The Bruins hold a 5-0 all-time record against the Tigers,with the last two meetings coming in 1999 with a 9-0 five-inning win onMar. 6 at the Hallowell Chevrolet Classic in Fresno, CA, and a 12-5 winin the NCAA Regional Championship game. Missouri is coached by TySingleton, and has a 2003 record of 8-6.

Bruins Win FAU Worth Invitational Title
UCLA dominated the Florida Atlantic Worth Invitational, posting a 5-0record and allowing just one unearned run during tournament play. Fortheir performances during the tournament, Natasha Watley and Keira Goerlwere named the Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively (seefirst page). Also notable was the performance of Tairia Mims, who hit.615 for the weekend, going 8-for-13 with three doubles, four RBIs, fourruns scored, two walks and a sacrifice fly. Michelle Turner also pitchedwell for the Bruins, earning victories over Rutgers (8-1 on Feb. 21) andFlorida International (3-0 on Feb. 22). Turner struck out eight inFriday's win over Rutgers, allowing just one unearned run and notissuing a walk, while allowing just one hit.

Junior designated player Claire Sua grew up approximately half an hour'sdrive away from FAU, and had an impressive weekend playing in front ofher family and friends. Sua hit .429 (6-for-14) with seven RBIs, tworuns scored and a home run against host school Florida Atlantic. Suaplayed both first base and designated player during the weekend, andposted a 1.000 fielding percentage on 25 chances, all of them putouts.

Next Week in Bruin Softball
UCLA will play in its last games prior to winter quarter final examsnext week as the Bruins travel to Fresno, CA, for the Hedrick'sHallowell Chevrolet Classic. UCLA is scheduled to face BYU,St. John's, Cal Poly, DePaul and the host Fresno State Bulldogs duringthe four-day tournament.
