Freshman's Three-Run Homer Keys 6-4 Win Against UC Irvine

LOS ANGELES - Freshman catcher Jeff Clement went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI Tuesday and the No. 16 USC Trojans defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters, 6-4, in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. Clement now leads the Trojans on the season in home runs (six) and RBI (13) as the Trojans snapped their four-game losing streak.
Josh Rummonds (1-0) earned the win for USC (6-6) by going 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs (all unearned) on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Bret Butler earned his first save of the season with 3 1/3 innings of relief.
Chris Klemm went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI for UC Irvine, which fell to 4-8 on the season.
USC scored in the first when Michael Moon doubled to left center and Anthony Lunetta walked before Clement hit a 0-1 pitch from UCI starter Chris Nicoll (0-1) to right center for a three-run homer. The Trojans added another run in the third, but the Anteaters stayed in the game with two unearned runs in the fourth and one unearned run in the sixth.
In the top of the ninth, UCI had runners at first and second with one out before Butler got Jon Horwitz to ground out into a game-ending double play.
The Trojans travel to No. 9 Stanford this weekend for a non-conference series, beginning on Friday (Feb. 28) at 6 p.m. Games on Saturday (March 1) and Sunday (March 2) will both start at 1 p.m. All three games of the series will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
