Arizona's Erica Blasberg Takes Individual Title at Wildcat Invitational

Feb. 26, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona freshman golfer Erica Blasberg won her second career title Wednesday as she took medalist honors at the Wildcat Invitational with a three-round score of 210 (-3). But Blasberg's individual effort was not enough to lift Arizona out of ninth place as the Wildcats combined to shoot 912 (+60) over the three-day tournament, held at Arizona National Golf Club.

Pepperdine (294-292-290--876, +24) placed four individual golfers in the tournament's top ten to claim the team title at 876 (+24). Wednesday's final round saw the Waves shoot 6-over-par 290 to extend its lead over second-place Southern California to 14. Pepperdine's 14-stroke win is the largest margin of victory in the Wildcat Invitational since 1995 when Arizona State posted a 48-stroke win over second-place schools South Carolina and Wake Forest.

Trailing Southern California (308-286-296--890, +38) in third place was Arizona State which finished at 895 (+43). Tennessee and Stanford rounded out the top five teams, shooting 897 (+45) and 902 (+50) respectively.

Blasberg was the only golfer in the field to finish the tournament under par after closing with a final-round 68 (-3) Wednesday. By winning the event, the freshman standout from Corona, Calif., has now posted top-three finishes in her last five collegiate events. 2003 marks the third straight year an Arizona individual has won the title at the Wildcat Invitational.

Fellow freshman Cassandra Kirkland continued her impressive debut as she finished tied for 19th place with a three-day total of 224 (+11). Kirkland, from Saint-Nom-La-Breteche, France, was Arizona's second highest finisher, but since she competed as an individual her score does not contribute to the Wildcats' team total.

Senior Laura Myerscough posted a final-round of 4-over-par 75 to bring her total to 227 (+14) and finish in 25th place, her fourth top-25 showing in four events this season. Anne Lee, a senior from Northridge, Calif., tied for 50th place at 234 (+21). Sophomore Miriam Kraschinski shared 71st place as she shot 28-over 241 in the three-day tournament. Freshman Whitney Welch carded a three-round total of 261 (+48) to tie for 95th place.

Next for Arizona is the Dr. Thompson Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 18-19. Blasberg will miss action at Arizona's tournament in Hawaii as she will compete as a sponsor's exemption in the Welch's/Fry's Championship, the LPGA Tour stop in Tucson.
