Bruins Defeat Boston College, Missouri in Easton Classic Action
Feb. 28, 2003
LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked UCLA softball team improved its record to 19-1 on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium, defeating Boston College by a score of 9-0 and Missouri by a score of 8-0. Both games were five inning run-rule victories.
Freshman Michelle Turner came very close to pitching a perfect game, allowing just one base runner when with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Eagles center fielder Kim Hopkin singled up the middle for a single before Turner got the final batter of the game to ground out.
Offensively, the Bruins started quickly, batting around in the top of the first inning. Natasha Watley led off with an infield single, followed by a bunt single by Caitlin Benyi and a three-run home run by Tairia Mims. After Emily Zaplatosch walked, Toria Auelua singled up the middle, and a Monique Mejia single scored Zaplatosch, giving the Bruins a 4-0 lead. Watley added to the lead in the second inning with a lead-off home run to right field. Stephanie Ramos would then single through the right side of the infield, steal second base, and come around to score on a single by Tairia Mims that dropped just fair down the left field line. Mims would advance to second on the play and score on a double by Claire Sua, her first of four hits on the day.
In the fifth, the Bruins added two more runs as Sua led off with a walk and would score on a two-run shot to center field by Zaplatosch. Turner earned the win in the circle, improving to 6-0 on the season.
Keira Goerl started the nightcap against Missouri and retired the first seven batters she faced before giving up the lone hit of the game. Meanwhile, the Bruin offense picked up where it had left off against Boston College, as the Bruins posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning against Missouri.
A two-out rally in the first produced three UCLA runs. It started with a walk by Ramos, who would advance to third on a single by Mims. Claire Sua would then record a two-RBI single, scoring Ramos and Mims. Sua would advance to second on a single up the middle by Zaplatosch, and come around to score on a double by Toria Auelua.
Andrea Duran led off the bottom of the second inning with a single, advanced on a ground-out by Watley, and scored on a single up the middle by Caitlin Benyi, giving the Bruins a 4-0 lead after two innings. In the third, Sua led off with her fourth home run of the year, and UCLA posted a sixth run as Auelua singled, stole second and pinch-runner Amanda Simpson scored on a mis-played ball by Missouri's second baseman. Back-to-back home runs by Sua and Mims in the fourth inning gave UCLA eight runs, enough to shorten the game to a five inning run-rule win.
Goerl struck out seven and issued only two walks, pitching her seventh one-hitter of the season and the second Bruin one-hitter of the day. She improves to 13-1 on the season.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday morning at 9 am against Missouri at Easton Stadium in the second game of the Easton Classic.
