No. 9 Stanford Evens Series With 10-6 Victory

March 1, 2003

STANFORD, Calif. - Brian Hall went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and added a spectacular catch Saturday as the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal evened its non-conference series with a 10-6 win against the No. 16 USC Trojans. Catcher Ryan Garko was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Sam Fuld went 4-for-5 for the Cardinal.

Ryan McCally (2-1) went 7 2/3 innings for Stanford (10-7), allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. David O'Hagan earned his first save of the season with 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Stanford scored six runs in the first off USC starter Fraser Dizard (1-1) as the first six batters of the inning reached base safely. Hall walked and Fuld singled to right. Hall scored after a wild pitch by Dizard and error by third baseman Michael Moon on the throw by catcher Jeff Clement. Carlos Quentin walked before Garko delivered an RBI double to right, plating Fuld. After another walk, Dizard hit designated hitter Danny Putnam with a 1-0 pitch for the third run.

Tobin Swope chased Dizard with an RBI single to right and a two-run single by Hall against reliever Al Benavente completed the scoring.

Dizard lasted only 1/3 of an inning, allowing six runs on three hits with three walks and no strikeouts. On the afternoon, Trojan pitchers walked eight and hit four batters.

The Trojans scored in the second when Clement hit a mammoth home run to right, his seventh of the season and Travis McAndrews hit an RBI groundout in the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, Joey Metropoulos hit his second home run of the season with a solo shot to left center. With two outs and the Cardinal employing a 'Barry Bonds' defensive shift for Clement, the Trojans caught a break when a chopper to Swope, playing left of second base, bobbled the ball. Senior right fielder David Gordon made Stanford pay with a two-run homer to left on a 2-2 offering from McCally. It was Gordon's fourth homer of the season.

The series, tied at one game apiece, will conclude tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on
