No. 9 Stanford Wins Series With 18-4 Decision Over No. 16 USC

March 2, 2003

STANFORD, Calif. - Danny Putnam went 3-for-4 with two three-run homers and seven RBI Sunday and the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal registered an 18-4 non-conference victory over the No. 16 USC Trojans at Sunken Diamond. Cardinal hitters accounted for five home runs on the afternoon after USC had allowed only three homers all season.

Stanford improved to 11-7 overall while USC fell to 7-8 on the season. Neither freshman starter pitched effectively as Stanford's Mark Romanczuk (4-0) gave up four runs on seven hits in six innings with three walks and four strikeouts. USC's Bobby Paschal gave up eight runs on seven hits in six innings with four walks and four strikeouts. Matt Manship earned his third save of the season with three scoreless innings.

Stanford turned a triple play in the second inning when David Gordon hit a liner to shortstop Tobin Swope, who threw to Chris Lewis at second and completed the rare defensive situation to first baseman John Mayberry, Jr., after both Trojan runners were running on the play.

In the bottom of the third, Swope led off with a double to right and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Paschal. With one out, Brian Hall hit a line shot that bounced off USC second baseman Jon Brewster's glove. Brewster grabbed the ball, but threw it away to score Swope.

With two outs and a runner on first in the top of the fourth, Romanczuk walked Jeff Clement and hit right fielder David Gordon with a pitch to load the bases for left fielder Darin Vieira. Vieira singled to left, scoring two runs to put the Trojans ahead, 2-1.

The Cardinal answered in their half of the fourth when Mayberry, Jr., hit his third triple of the season, plating Ryan Garko. Designated hitter Danny Putnam hit a bloop single to right to score Mayberry, Jr., for a 3-2 Stanford lead.

Anthony Lunetta hit his third home run of the season with a two-run shot to left in the fifth, but once again the Cardinal returned the favor with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Garko hit a two-run double to shallow right that bounced off Gordon's glove on the run followed by a three-run homer to right center by Putnam to complete the two-out rally.

The Trojans return home to play UNLV on Tuesday (March 4) at 3 p.m. at Dedeaux Field. The game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on
