Bruins Open Pac-10 Season Against No. 2 USC, Oregon

The No. 8 UCLA Women's Tennis team opens the Pac-10 schedule this week, visiting crosstown-rival No. 2 USC (10-1) on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and playing at Oregon (9-5) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins and Trojans met on Jan. 31, 2003 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, with USC pulling out a 4-3 win. Friday's match will be the only meeting between the Bruins and Ducks this season. UCLA holds a 6-0 advantage all-time over Oregon, and won last year's meeting 7-0.
Bruins Sweep LMU . . .
Ending a streak of 4-3 finals that went for eight matches, the Bruins recorded their third sweep of the year, beating Loyola Marymount, 7-0. All six of UCLA's singles players against LMU were in their first season of dual-match play. Freshman Nina Yaftali won the first dual match she played as a Bruin, 6-0, 6-0 over LMU's Erin Sanchez.
Carleton, Wild, and the Bruins Move Up in Rankings . . .
UCLA's Jackie Carleton had a jump of over 50 places in the latest ITA singles rankings, moving from 84 to No. 31 in the nation. Fellow freshman Susi Wild made her debut on the list at No. 42. Sara Walker moved one spot to No. 7. UCLA placed its first doubles team in the rankings, with Carleton and Laura Gordon checking in at No. 59. As a team, the Bruins climbed one spot to No. 8. With the current rankings, the Bruins face the top five teams in the nation, as well as five other teams in the top-20.
The Gauntlet Battle Resumes . . .
The Lexus Gauntlet battle is in its second year, putting the Bruins against the Trojans and awarding points for victories between the two schools. Currently, USC leads 45-30. The Trojans earned 2 1/2 points for their 4-3 win over UCLA on Jan. 31.

Stella Sampras Webster Guides the Bruins . . .
In her seventh season as the Bruins' head coach, Stella Sampras Webster earned her milestone 100th career win against No. 11 Tennessee. In her first six seasons, she guided the Bruins to five top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including three top-5 showings (1997, 2000, and 2002). In 2000, she was named the ITA West Region Coach of the Year. The former Stella Sampras married Steve Webster on January 3, 2003.
