OSU Hires Four Football Assistant Coaches
March 3, 2003
CORVALLIS - Oregon State football coach Mike Riley announced the hiring Monday of four assistants to join his staff.
The four assistants include offensive coordinator Paul Chryst; defensive coordinator Mark Banker; offensive line coach Jim Gilstrap and wide receiver coach DelVaughn Alexander. Chryst, Banker and Gilstrap were members of Riley's first staff at Oregon State, while Alexander coached for Riley with the San Diego Chargers.
Chryst returns to Oregon State after spending the past season as tight ends coach at Wisconsin. Previously, he served three years with Riley at San Diego coaching the tight ends. Chryst was OSU's offensive coordinator and quarterback coach under Riley in 1997 and '98.
'I am excited to have Paul Chryst return to Oregon State,' said Riley. 'I have coached with Paul for a number of years. I think he brings to us a wealth of offensive knowledge, plus the face he has an extensive background as a recruiter in the Bay Area.'
Banker spent the past season as defensive coordinator at Stanford. He also had followed Riley to San Diego, where he was the secondary coach for two years and defensive coordinator the final year of Riley's tenure. Banker was the Beavers' secondary coach in 1997 and '98.
'Mark was the secondary coach for the Beavers a few years ago,' Riley said. 'He then joined me as defensive backfield coach for the Chargers, followed by a stint as defensive coordinator for one year. He was then hired at Stanford as defensive coordinator. I have a lot of respect for the work that he has done. I think he is a great addition to the Oregon State coaching staff. He also has had an extensive recruiting background in Southern California.'
Gilstrap was OSU's offensive line coach and assistant head coach under Riley in 1997 and '98. Gilstrap did not follow Riley to the Chargers. He served as an assistant athletic director and assistant football coach at Linfield during the 1999 season. He moved to Tulsa as offensive coordinator and running backs coach for the 2000 and '01 seasons. He spent the 2002 football season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
'Jim Gilstrap has been with me for many years,' said Riley. 'Jim has expertise in many areas of football, and of course that includes a great deal of experience on the offensive line. He did an outstanding job of putting together an offensive line the last time we were together at Oregon State. I am really glad he has returned. He also has done a great job of recruiting in California in the area from Sacramento to Bakersfield.'
Alexander is new to Oregon State. He most recently was the wide receiver coach at UNLV under John Robinson for the past three seasons. He spent the 1999 season as an offensive assistant under Riley at San Diego. Alexander was the wide receivers' coach at UNLV in 1998. He coached the wide receivers and tight ends under Robinson at USC in 1996-97.
Alexander is a 1995 graduate of USC and was a two-year letterman wide receiver, while playing alongside three future NFL draft picks in Keyshawn Johnson, Johnnie Morton and Curtis Conway.
'DelVaughn Alexander is a young man that I have know for many years from the time that he played at USC,' said Riley. 'He went to UNLV with John Robinson and we hired him (1999) to join our San Diego Chargers staff, then he returned to coach with Robinson at UNLV. He has been extensively involved in the passing game while coaching the wide receivers. He will do a great job with the receivers at Oregon State. He will add to our recruiting base in the Los Angeles area.'
Riley said he hopes to complete his staff before the end of the week.
