BERKELEY-- - The University of California's men's and women's track and field team competed against each other in the Blue vs. Gold Intrasquad meet, Saturday, Mar. 1 at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field.
The event was an exciting way to kick off the beginning of the outdoor track and field season. Comparing the results to those who competed during the indoor season, several Golden Bears already bested their indoor marks. Sophomore Girmay Guangul ran his fastest 3,000m, clocking a time of 8:34.97 and first-place finish in the event. Junior Jason Gatewood placed third in the high jump, behind freshman Teak Wilburn and Greg Walker, but jumped his best mark of the season yet at 6-8.75.
In the men's long jump, senior Vincent Ibia won the event with a season-best mark of 24-0.25 and runner-up Gatewood also jumped a season-best of 23-3.25. On the women's side, both freshmen Antonette Carter and Mary Meyman recorded season-bests with respective marks of 18-3 and 17-11.50. The shot put was another event that saw new best marks generated as junior Jenna Johnson (58-1), senior Sheni Russell (55-11.75) and freshman Carrie Johnson (47-5) each shot new top marks.
Cal is back in outdoor action with another home meet Mar. 21-22. The Bears host Boise State and Azusa Pacific in a triangular meet that weekend. Friday showcases the hammer event, while Saturday is a complete day of track and field events beginning at 11 a.m.
