March 4, 2003
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - -
Michael Jurgensen led the Oregon State men's golf team with his 4-over-par 217 at USC's Cleveland Golf Classic on Tuesday, finishing tied for 23rd.
OSU's three-round total of 23-over 875 tied the Beavers for 13th with rival Oregon.
Eighth-ranked UCLA won the tournament by seven strokes over California with a 7-under 845.
The Beavers were in good position coming down the stretch, but faltered on the last few holes, finishing seven shots out of a tie for eighth. OSU was within 10 shots of nine schools, including fourth place Pacific-10 rivals Arizona State and Stanford, as well as Washington.
'Overall, we had an up-and-down tournament,' OSU coach Brian Watts said. 'We'll look back knowing we had an opportunity to beat a lot of good teams. Unfortunately, we didn't putt well down the stretch and we made some mental mistakes on the last two holes today, which really set us back.
'We were looking pretty good going into the last two holes, but we just didn't finish strong.'
Jurgensen carded a 74 in the final round at the par-71 North Ranch Country Club, giving him his sixth finish of 26th or better this year at 217.
Freshman Kenny Coakley was one shot back of Jurgensen in a tie for 30th after a 72 Tuesday gave him a 218.
UCLA's Steve Conway won medalist honors by a stroke over Cal's Peter Tomasulo, shooting a 6-under 207.
Eleven of the 17 teams were ranked in the top 50, including four in the top 25.
OSU is off until Mar. 24-25, when they compete in the Duck Invitational in Eugene.
