Bruins Face Full Slate At Fresno State Tourney

Following a 7-0 record last week at UC Santa Barbara and at the EastonClassic, the Bruins return to the road this week as they play in thefour-day Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic at Bulldog Diamond on thecampus of Fresno State University. UCLA is quite familiar with thistournament, having participated in the 1998-2001 versions. UCLA has onegame a day on Thursday (BYU), Friday (St. John's) and Saturday (CalPoly) and a two-game slate on Sunday, facing DePaul and host Fresno State.
UCLA vs. This Week's Opponents
BYU-- UCLA won the only previous meeting between the two teams, a 10-2five-inning win at the 2002 UNLV Classic. The Cougars have a 2003 recordof 9-4 and are coached by Gordon Eakin.
St. John's-- Friday night's game will mark the first meeting between theBruins and the Red Storm. St. John's has a 2003 record of 6-8 and iscoached by Melody Cope. The Red Storm is led offensively by Megan Oliver(.297 BA) and in the circle by Courtney Fitzgerald (6-4 record, 2.00 ERA)
Cal Poly-- UCLA holds an all-time record of 12-3 against the Mustangswith the most recent meetings coming in 2001, when UCLA swept the threecontests, winning 5-0 and 10-2 (6 inn) at the Early Bird Classic and 9-1(6) at the Hallowell Chevrolet Classic. The Mustangs are coached by LisaBoyer, and have a 2--3 record of 13-13. Cal Poly is led offensively byRoni Sparrey (.349 BA) and in the circle by Jamie Gelbart (2.29 ERA).
DePaul-- UCLA leads the all-time series with DePaul 6-0, with the mostrecent meeting a 4-0 win at the 2001 Hedrick's Hallowell ChevroletClassic. The Blue Demons have a 2003 record of 6-2 and are coached byEugene Lenti. DePaul is led offensively by Katy Klukman (.500 BA) and inthe circle by Lindsay Choinard (3-2 record, 0.75 ERA).
Fresno State-- The Bulldogs and Bruins have met 42 times, including NCAAChampionship games in 1982, '88, '89, and '90 (all UCLA wins). UCLAholds an all-time record of 32-10 against Fresno State, most recentlysweeping a doubleheder at UCLA's Easton Stadium in 2002 with game scoresof 1-0 and 7-0. The Bulldogs are coached by the NCAA's all-timewinningest coach, Margie Wright, and have a 2003 record of 3-8.
Bruins Sweep Santa Barbara, Win Easton Classic
UCLA opened last week's schedule with a doubleheader sweep at UC SantaBarbara, winning 6-0 and 2-0 over the Gauchos. The Bruins then returnedhome for the Easton Classic, where UCLA powered to a 5-0 record en routeto the tournament title. Keira Goerl pitched three one-hit shutouts,giving her nine one-hitters among her 16 decisions on the year. Goerlstruck out 10 and did not walk a batter against Missouri on Saturday,and had 24 strikeouts and just two walks over 19 innings for theweekend. Offensively, Claire Sua hit .600 in tournament play, going6-for-10 with five runs scored, eight RBIs, a double, two home runs,four walks and a sacrifice fly. Sua hit both of her home runs duringFriday's game against Missouri, going yard in consecutive at-bats in thethird and fourth inning. Her fourth inning home run immediately followeda home run by Tairia Mims, her eighth of the season. On Friday againstBoston College, freshman pitcher Michelle Turner came within one out ofpitching a perfect game, but gave up a hit with two outs in the bottomof the fourth inning. UCLA's staff had a 0.24 ERA and a 5-0 recordduring tournament play.

This week's Hedricks Hallowell Chevrolet Classic marks the finalcompetition for the Bruins until after winter quarter final exams. TheBruins return to action on Tue., Mar. 25 at Cal State Fullerton, beforetraveling to the Bay Area to begin Pac-10 play.
