March 5, 2003
SALINAS, Calif - -
Oregon State senior Stacie Ferguson's final-round 72 helped the Beavers move up to eighth at the Spartan Invitational and gave her a tie for 23rd overall.
OSU totaled a 301 on the day, giving the Beavers a three-round total of 918, enough to edge ninth-place Oregon by three shots.
'We moved up to where we needed to be and beat some teams we needed to beat,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. 'We played very consistently today and had a very good round as a team.'
Pepperdine continued its torrid play, shooting a 9-under-par 279 Wednesday to finish at 18-under 846 for a 36-shot win over UCLA.
Ferguson fired an even-par 36-36-72 at the Corral de Tierra Country Club, giving her a total of 225, which is the second-lowest score on the team this year. The Tucson, Ariz., native now has 10 top-25 finishes in her career.
Kelly Ferris, a junior from Albany, Ore., had a career tournament with a 228 and a tie for 28th.
'Having Kelly, who was our No. 5 player, play so well helped us out a bunch,' Lakowske said. 'She's improved a good deal over last fall and is hitting the ball very well.'
Alex Lucio gave OSU a consistent tournament as well, sandwiching two rounds of 78 around a second-round 79 to tie for 46th with a 235.
After struggling on in the first two rounds, junior Laura Skinner carded a 74 to jump up the leaderboard and join Lucio at 235.
Ashlei Pendleton aggravated a wrist injury Wednesday while playing out of a bunker, and shot an 81. Overall, she shot 237 and tied for 53rd.
Pepperdine's Katherine Hull ran away with the individual title, firing a 16-under 200 for an eight-shot win over teammate Lindsay Wright. Hull's tournament included rounds of 63 and 66.
OSU is off until the Pioneer Bruin Classic March 24-26 in Los Angeles.
