March 5, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's soccer team will host an exhibition game against the San Diego Spirit of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), Saturday, March 29 at 4:00 p.m. The exhibition will be played at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium, located just East of Rural Road and Sixth Street next to the Adidas Athlete Performance building and behind the band practice fields.
The San Diego Spirit features some of the brightest and most exciting players in the WUSA, including the team's three Founding Players and US National Team members Julie Foudy, Shannon MacMillan and Joy Fawcett. The Spirit will also have the services of their No. 1 draft pick and the 2002 college player of the year Aly Wagner.
'We are excited to be coming to Tempe, Arizona to play our final pre-season game,' said San Diego Spirit head coach Omid Namazi. 'It will be the great getaway and the combination of the weather and the great facilities will be ideal to put the final touches on our team. Arizona State is a program on the rise and they have some excellent players. Playing the Sun Devils will be the perfect match for us heading into our opening game a week later.'
The Sun Devils, who advanced to the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament, return all of their starters, including freshman All-Americans Manya Makoski (U-19 National Team) and Elizabeth Bogus. ASU's top defender and U-21 National Team player Amy LePeilbet and U-19 National Team player Stephanie Ebner will lead the Devil back line.
'We are thrilled to have this opportunity to host a professional women's soccer team at Arizona State,' said Sun Devil head coach Ray Leone. 'It is not only great experience for our players, but also for the community to see world class players, Julie Foudy, Joy Fawcett and Shannon MacMillian. I encourage the community to come out and see this one of a kind event!'
Tickets for the game will be $5.00 dollars for general admission, $3.00 for youth (high school and younger and seniors 60 years and older) and $3.00 for groups of 20 or more. For tickets call (480) 965-2381. Parking for the game is free and will be located in the parking lot next to the stadium.
