Mendiola Named 2002-03 Pac-10 Conference Women's Basketball Player Of The Year

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- In a vote of the 10 Conference coaches, WASHINGTON junior guardGiuliana Mendiola has been named the 2002-03 Pacific-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Year,ARIZONA's Shawntinice Polk has been selected as Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and Tara VanDerveerof STANFORD has been named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Commissioner Tom Hansen announcedtoday.

PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE YEAR
MENDIOLA was instrumental in leading Washington to a 21-6 overall, 13-5 Pac-10 regular seasonrecord. She is a two-time All-Pac-10 selection and becomes the first Husky player ever to earn Pac-10Player of the Year honors. Mendiola finished the regular season as the Pac-10's leader in assists (5.41apg). She is fourth in the Conference in scoring (17.3 rpg), second in free throw percentage (.843), eighthin rebounding (6.5), second in 3-point field goal percentage (.447), ninth in 3-point field goals made(1.56), eighth in offensive rebounds (2.48) and fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.74). A three-timePlayer of the Week honoree this season, Mendiola led UW in scoring in 13 games, including a 43-pointeffort against UCLA on Feb. 1. She set a new school record for points in a game, just seven shy of the Pac-10record. Mendiola has 424 career assists, good enough to place second on the Husky career assistcharts, needing just 17 more to take sole possession of first place.
PAC-10 FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
POLK becomes just the third player in Wildcat history and second in as many years to be named Pac-10Freshman of the Year. UA's Dee-Dee Wheeler claimed the award in 2001-02. Polk is ranked in the topthree spots in six of a possible 12 Pac-10 categories, including scoring (17.9, third), rebounding (10.8,first), field goal percentage (.625, first), blocked shots (2.70, first), offensive rebounds (3.78, first) anddefensive rebounds (7.00, second). She is on track to become the first freshman in Conference history,true or redshirt, to finish the season ranked in the Top-10 in scoring, rebounding and field goalpercentage. With 482 points and 291 rebounds through regular season play, Polk set new Arizonafreshman scoring and rebounding records. A four-time Player of the Week honoree this season, she hasposted a league-leading 19 double-doubles this season.
PAC-10 COACH OF THE YEAR
VANDERVEER in her 17th season at Stanford, guided the Cardinal to a 23-4 overall record, 15-3 inPac-10 play. Stanford has remained in the Top-10 of both the AP and USA Today/ESPN pollsthroughout the season, earning a season-high No. 4 ranking Dec. 2 and 9. VanDerveer has molded theCardinal into one of the Pac-10's strongest teams as Stanford leads the Conference in six of a possible 19statistical categories. Among Pac-10 teams, the Cardinal is tops in scoring defense, scoring margin, freethrow percentage, rebounding defense, rebounding margin and defensive rebounds. A 2002 inductee intothe Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, VanDerveer is one of 20 finalists for the Naismith Women'sBasketball Coach of the Year award. The Pac-10 Coach of the Year honor is the sixth of VanDerveer'scareer.
BLUE earns her first All-Pac-10 selection along with being named to this year's Pac-10 All-FreshmanTeam. She is averaging 16.3 points per game, good enough to rank sixth in the Conference. She also istied for seventh in assists (3.44 apg), fourth in steals (2.33 spg) and 10th in assist/turnover ratio (1.03).
ESTAVAN is a first-time All-Conference selection. The junior guard leads the Beavers in steals (2.0spg), assists (4.8 apg) and minutes played (34.2). She ranks 15th among Pac-10 players for scoring and isthird in assist/turnover ratio (1.84).
GRECO is a two-time All-Pac-10 pick. She is the Pac-10's leading scorer and thief, averaging 19.2points per game and 2.78 steals per game. A Jan. 13 Player of the Week honoree, she ranks fourth in theConference in free throw percentage (.807).
HOFFMAN earns All-Pac-10 honors for the second consecutive season. She is USC's leading scorer andrebounder, averaging 16.1 points and 9.4 boards per game (seventh and second respectively in the Pac-10).This season, she has notched 11 double-doubles and nine 20-point games.
MENDIOLA is a two-time All-Pac-10 selection and became the first Husky in history to earn Pac-10Player of the Year honors. She paces the league in assists (5.41), while ranking second in free throwpercentage (.843) and fourth in scoring (17.3 ppg).
PAYNE is a two-time All-Pac-10 selection. With 242 three-point field goals made, she ranks second inthe Pac-10 career charts and first in the Husky record books. She led the team in scoring in five gamesthis season and recorded six 20-plus point games.
POLK earns her first All-Pac-10 selection along with being named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman teamand Freshman of the Year. She is on track to become the first freshman in Conference history to finishthe season ranked in the Top-10 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage.
POWELL is a three-time All-Conference selection and was last season's Pac-10 Player of the Year. Sheis averaging a near double-double of 18.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game after missing the first ninegames of the season with a bulging disk in her lower back. She is one of 20 finalists for the NaismithPlayer of the Year award and one of 13 finalists for the State Farm Wade Trophy.
SUMINSKI is named an All-Pac-10 player for the first time in her career. The sophomore guard leadsthe Cardinal in assists (3.11 apg) and minutes played (30.6 mpg). She also ranks eighth in theConference in assist/turnover ratio (1.15).
WHEELER earns Pac-10 honors for the first time in her career. She was named Pac-10 Freshman of theYear in 2002 and certainly has lived up to expectations her second time around. She has led Arizona inscoring on 13 different occasions and has nine 20-point games.
PAC-10 ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM
BLUE is the 10th Bruin ever to earn All-Freshman honors. She is averaging 16.3 points per game, goodenough to rank sixth in the Conference. She also is tied for seventh in assists (3.44 apg), fourth in steals(2.33 spg) and 10th in assist/turnover ratio (1.03).
DENSON leads Arizona State in field goals made (4.0 fgpg) and rebounding (6.1 rpg). Her six boards agame are good enough to place her at No. 10 in the Pac-10 rebounding charts. She has started in 26 ofASU's 27 games this season and has recorded two double-doubles.
GANES becomes the ninth Duck ever to earn All-Freshman honors. Ganes is 17th on the Pac-10 scoringcharts, sinking 11.2 points per game and ranks sixth in the Conference in free throw percentage at (.802).This season she recorded career highs of 25 points (vs. BYU 12/7) and 10 rebounds (vs. WSU 1/25).
NOE joins fellow Sun Devil Denson on the All-Freshman squad. The talented guard is 11th in the Pac-10in scoring (12.5 ppg) and ninth in steals (1.93 spg). She has posted five 20-plus point games and wasnamed the Dec. 16 Pac-10 Player of the Week.
