Bruin Fans Up To The Challenge
March 7, 2003
The challenge was issued: pack Pauley Pavilion with 5,000 or more fans and Head Coach Kathy Olivier would donate $1,000 to the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA . On Saturday, March 1, 5,029 fans responded and helped the Bruins meet this goal.
'I am very pleased that so many people came to the game and helped us raise money for a great organization. It brought more people out to support this team and women's basketball, and they got to see a great game with a clutch ending. This event was definitely a huge success for everyone involved and all the credit goes to our fans - they made it happen.'
During the second half, Associate Athletic Director Betsy Stephenson presented Dr. Thomas Klitzner, Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at the Mattel Children's Hospital, with a check for $1,000. After the game, Dr. Klitzner commented, 'It was a wonderful experience to be at courtside when so many fans came out to watch a great basketball game and support both Bruin Women's Basketball and the Mattel Children's Hospital.'
Mattel CEO Bob Eckert also jointed the Bruins at courtside and shared in the prevailing enthusiasm. 'It was wonderful to see the fans come out in support of the Hospital. You're fortunate to be part of such a warm and supportive community.'
The Coach's Challenge was an undeniable success. Thank you to all of the Bruin fans who came to Pauley Pavilion for this special day.
