March 7, 2003
Plant City, Fla. - Cassi Brangham (Clovis, CA) delivered a single to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the 12th-ranked Stanford softball team a 1-0 win over host No. 22 South Florida on Friday afternoon at the ISF Stadium in the Speedline Invitational. The Cardinal also won their second game of the day, 7-3 over Long Island, to remain perfect in tournament pool play and stand at 18-6 overall.
South Florida recorded the game's first hit when Renee Oursler led off the third inning with a double. Starter Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) then struck out Krista Holle, got Kattrina Dowd to pop up and Stephanie Roberts to ground out, holding the 0-0 tie.
Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) got Stanford's first hit of the game in the fourth inning and stole second on the next pitch. Morris got to third base, but was left stranded. Sorensen and the Cardinal defense did not allow another hit, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning wit the game tied at 0-0.
Brangham recorded Stanford's second hit of the contest, a two-out single to left in the seventh inning. She then was thrown out trying to steal second, sending the game into extra innings and the international tiebreaker.
South Florida had the first chance to score a run, but following a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third Sorensen fanned the next to batters. The Cardinal came back in the bottom of the inning to load the bases with one out. Bull starter Leigh Ann Ellis got Meghan Sickler (Houston, TX) to ground into a fielder's choice at home and struck out Laura Severson (Frankfort, IL).
Stanford shutdown the Bulls in the ninth and did not allow the runner at second to advance. Katherine Hoffman (Kansas City, MO) started at second, running for Severson in the bottom of the ninth inning. Ellis intentially walked Morris and Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) advanced the runners with a ground out to second. Jessica Allister (Nocogdoches, TX) was walked to load the bases and Brangham delivered the game-winning base hit scoring Hoffman for the 1-0 Stanford win.
Sorensen picked up her seventh win of the year on a one-hitter, finishing with 11 strikeouts. Brangham recorded two of Stanford's three hits in the game and got the game's only RBI.
In the nightcap against Long Island, Brangham continued her hitting streak in the first inning by smashing a double to plate both Morris and Ching for the 2-0 Cardinal lead. Long Island answered with two runs of its own in the second off a two RBI double by Sonia Zapata to tie the game.
Stanford came back with a three run third inning, with Ching leading off with a base hit. She later stole second and came home on Allister's fourth home run of the year. With two outs, Hoffman came through with a single to score Allister and the 5-2 Cardinal advantage.
The Cardinal added two more insurance runs in the fourth on Brangham's second double of the game, scoring Heather Shook (Whittier, CA) and Morris. Long Island later scored in the sixth on two Stanford errors, but starting pitcher Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) shut them down in the seventh inning as the Cardinal went on to win 7-3.
Nyberg picked up her eighth win of the season to stand at 8-3. She went the complete game and finished with five strikeouts and scattered seven hits.
