No. 17 Softball Splits In Friday's Opening Action Of NIST
March 7, 2003
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The No. 17 Oregon State softball squad split a pair of games in blustery conditions on Friday's opening day action of the National Invitational Softball Tournament. The Beavers dropped a 3-1 contest to University of Missouri-Kansas City before recovering with a 7-0 victory against tourney host San Jose State University.
In the opener UMKC (2-7) took advantage of a walk, two Beaver errors, and timely hitting to score a pair of runs in the second inning.
Oregon State (17-8) answered with a run of its own in the top of the third. Brynnen Guthrie roped her second hit of the contest and later scored on Shelly Prochaska's two-out RBI single to right-center.
The Kangaroos added an insurance run in the fifth and kept the Beaver offense stymied for the rest of the contest.
Guthrie led OSU with a 2-for-3 effort from the plate and Prochaska finished 1-for-2. Dena DuBois was credited with the loss despite allowing just three hits before being replaced by Amy Klever in the fifth.
Both teams recorded four hits in the contest.
'The first game was disappointing all-around,' said Walker. 'It was nice to see us come back and perform well against San Jose State.'
The Beaver offense came alive in the nightcap. Oregon State opened the contest with five consecutive batters reaching base and Prochaska connecting on a two-RBI single to right field.
OSU added three more runs in the bottom of the second when Prochaska sent a shot over the left-center field fence that plated Clare Burnum and Guthrie. The home run was the fifth of the season for Prochaska and the 12th of her career.
SJSU attempted to mount a comeback in the fourth inning after two consecutive batters singled to reach base, but the Beaver defense clamped down and recorded three straight outs to squelch any attempt of a Spartan rally.
Freshman hurler Amy Klever improved to 4-1 on the season with the complete game victory. Klever allowed just five runners to reach base in the contest and earned her first career shutout.
'Amy threw a nice ball game,' said Walker. 'Offensively it was nice to score early and swing the bat aggressively.'
Guthrie finished the game with a 3-for-4 clip from the plate with two runs scored while Prochaska went 2-for-4 with five RBI. Burnum added a 2-for-3 mark for the Beavers and scored a pair of runs.
Oregon State continues tournament action on Saturday with a 12 p.m. contest against an opponent to be named later.
