FRESNO, CA - The top-ranked UCLA softball team improved its record to 24-1 on Friday night in Fresno, CA, with an 8-0 five-inning win over St. John's at the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic. UCLA pounded out 10 hits in the shutout win as Andrea Duran went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Natasha Watley had three RBIs, including driving in the game-ending run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Bruins put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, manufacturing the first run as Natasha Watley reached base on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Caitlin Benyi and scored on a single up the middle by Tairia Mims. UCLA then loaded the bases when Claire Sua was hit by a pitch, and a second run would score when Emily Zaplatosch grounded to the Red Storm third baseman, who threw to the plate for one out, then tried to get Zaplatosch at first base, but threw the ball over the head of St. John's first baseman, allowing Mims to score.
In the second, Monique Mejia led off with a single, and advanced to third on a single down the right field line by Andrea Duran. After Duran stole second, Mejia scored and Duran advanced to third on a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Watley, making the score 3-0. With Duran on third and two outs, Tairia Mims hit a ground-rule double to left center field, as the ball dropped in the warning track and hopped over the outfield fence, scoring Duran to make the score 4-0 UCLA.
The third inning saw the Bruins post three unearned runs, as a two-out rally started with Toria Auelua reaching base and advancing to second on an error by the Red Storm shortstop. From there, Mejia walked and Duran hit a double down the left field line that hit the chalk just past the bag at third base before bouncing foul. Both Auelua and Mejia scored on the play. Duran would come home on a single through the right side of the infield by Watley, bringing the score to 7-0 Bruins through three complete innings.
After a scoreless fourth, the Bruins loaded the bases on a rally that started with Emily Zaplatosch drawing a lead-off walk. Mejia then reached on a fielders choice and both runners were safe when the ball was dropped at second base. Duran then posted an infield single to load the bases for Watley, who singled to left field for the game-ending run, giving UCLA the 8-0 win in five innings.
Michelle Turner improved to 8-0 with the complete-game shutout, striking out two and scattering four hits.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday night with a 7 pm scheduled first pitch against Cal Poly. The Bruins will then complete their schedule at the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic with two games on Sunday, an 11 am start against No. 13 DePaul, and a 1 pm first pitch against the host Fresno State Bulldogs.
