Wildcats Shoot 291 at Day One of Toyota Men's Collegiate Golf Championship

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - After round one of the Toyota Men's Collegiate Golf Championships, Arizona is tied for 11th place with an opening-round score of 3-over-par 291. Junior Chris Nallen leads the way individually as he shot 2-under 70 to stand tied for tenth.
Texas scorched the Southern Highlands Golf Club for a first-round score of 7-under-par 281 to grab the lead with 36 holes remaining. Host squad Nevada-Las Vegas sits one stroke back after it shot 282 (-6) Friday. Georgia's Kevin Kisner holds the individual lead as he posted a 65 (-7). Jason Moon of North Carolina State trails Kisner by one stroke in second place.
Nallen rebounded from a rough start to Friday's round, shooting 4-under-par over the final 14 holes. The junior from Blairstown, N.J., made double bogey and bogey on holes No. 3 and 4, but made six birdies and only one more bogey throughout the remainder of his round. His opening round 70 places him five strokes off the lead.
Ricky Barnes, fresh off a top-20 performance at the PGA Tour's Chrysler Classic of Tucson, shot 1-under-par 71 and is tied for 18th place. Freshman Blaine Peffley carded an opening-round 74 and sits tied for 41st place. Senior Andrew Medley posted a 4-over-par 76 to grab a share of 60th place. Senior Reid Hatley rounded out the Arizona lineup and is in 77th place with a day one score of 9-over 81.
Arizona will look to rebound from its rocky opening round when the tournament continues with 18 more holes Saturday. The Wildcats have won both events they have competed in during the 2003 spring season.
