No. 4 Bears (8-2) Sweep Arizona Schools, Defeat No. 7 Sun Devils, 5-2

March 8, 2003

Berkeley, Calif. - The No. 4 California women's tennis team defeated conference foe No. 7 Arizona State, 5-2, this afternoon, March 8 at the Hellman Tennis Courts in Berkeley. The Bears' No. 56 Jieun Jacobs won her third consecutive match to improve to 8-2 in dual match play.

The Bears swept the three doubles matches to earn the early 1-0 lead. A day after their dramatic comeback victory on No. 1 doubles vs. Arizona, No. 11 Raquel Kops-Jones and partner Christina Fusano returned to their winning ways with an 8-6 victory over Adria Engel and Lauren Colalillo. On court No. 2, Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt won their third straight match, dropping the nation's 51st-ranked pair of Mhairi Brown and Cindy Sureephong, 8-5. On court No. 3, Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch rebounded from yesterday's loss with a 6-5, default win over Joslynn Burkett and Dora Krstulovic.

In singles action, Cal dropped two of the six matches, but all they needed was the magic number three to clinch the match. No. 45 Fusano extended her winning streak to three with her 6-3, 6-1 destruction of No. 47 Krstulovic to give the Bears the 2-0 lead. Junior Catherine Lynch won for the second day in a row on court No. 3, defeating Mhairi Brown in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. No. 56 Jacobs extended her team-leading dual record to 8-2 with her 6-4, 6-3 victory over Cindy Sureephong to put the Bears up 4-0 and clinch the match.

After her thrilling comeback victory yesterday on court No. 7, Scheldt had an easier time today, completing a straight set 6-4, 6-4 victory over Joslynn Burkett. Junior Nicole Havlicek had a fight on her hands on court No. 5, but faltered in three sets to Lauren Colallilo, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6, to give the Sun Devils their first point of the afternoon. In the battle on the top spot, Engel and Kops-Jones fought to the bitter end. Ultimately, though, Kops-Jones suffered a leg cramp in a 5-5 third set, and was forced to default giving the All-American Engel the 6-4, 6-7, 5-5 win and Arizona State's second point of the match.

Cal returns to action tomorrow Wednesday, March 12 when it hosts No. 16 Fresno State in a non-conference 1:30 p.m. matchup at Hellman Tennis Courts in Berkeley.
