Beavers Claim Wins Over Victoria
March 9, 2003
VICTORIA, B.C. - -
The Oregon State women's rowing team won three of four races against the University of Victoria on Sunday, as the Beavers opened their spring racing season. The varsity, second varsity, and novice eights tallied victories.
The varsity eight battered its way through choppy water and a persistent headwind on the 2,000-meter Elk Lake course to finish well ahead of Victoria in a time of 7:09.48, topping Victoria's time of 7:20.73.
The Beavers got out to a boatlength's lead at the 500-meter mark, and extended the margin from there.
The win marked the first time in head coach Charlie Owen's 12-year tenure that OSU's varsity eight has won a race against Victoria.
'The varsity eight went out and rowed a pretty good race; they took control early,' Owen said. 'I think we're ahead of where we were last year.
'I'm happy with how things went today as a whole. This was the first race for a lot of people, so I think it's a good sign that we're on the right track.'
In the second varsity eight race, the Beavers took advantage of a good start and extended their lead over the first quarter of the race. After Victoria countered to pull closer, OSU pulled away for good at the 1,000-meter mark to finish over six seconds ahead of the Victoria boat in 7:27.91.
OSU's novice 'A' boat cruised to an open-water 26-second win, finishing in 7:49.12. The OSU 'B' boat came in at 8:20.59, just over five seconds off Victoria's pace.
The third varsity race was the only blemish on OSU's day, as the Beavers' time of 7:38.74 put them nine seconds back of Victoria.
Owen credited Victoria with a very strong third varsity eight, but also noted that OSU's third varsity eight finished well.
OSU opened with a lead, surrendered the gap when Victoria made a move over the second half of the race, and closed again down the stretch.
After snow and poor conditions for Saturday's short-course races, the teams were delayed for some time Sunday morning before the conditions settled enough for racing to begin.
OSU's next competition comes March 29 when it hosts Washington State in Dexter, Ore.
