Bruins Fall to No. 13 DePaul at Hallowell Chevrolet Classic
March 9, 2003
FRESNO, CA - Errors were costly for the Bruins on Sunday morning at he Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic, as DePaul used a lone unearned run to defeat the top-ranked Bruins by a score of 1-0. UCLA's Keira Goerl pitched her 11th one-hitter of the season and struck out seven, but the Bruins were unable to get a timely hit and were shut out for the second time this season.
Goerl pitched well in the day's opener, allowing a hit to the second batter of the game, then retiring the next 16 batters before the Bruins had consecutive errors that allowed the Blue Demons to push a run across the plate. The DePaul rally took place in the sixth inning, after Goerl struck out DePaul's eight and nine hitters before lead-off hitter Liz Bouck was safe when an errant throw pulled UCLA first baseman Tairia Mims off of the bag.
Sarah Martz then chopped a hit that dribbled just in front of the plate. Emily Zaplatosch fielded the ball and threw it to Mims at first, but the throw was too high and went into foul territory in right field, putting both runners on the move. Bouck was able to come around before Bruin right fielder Caitlin Benyi could track down the ball, but Martz was thrown out at the plate when Benyi threw the ball in to Zaplatosch at the plate and Martz was caught in a rundown with the Bruins getting the out to end the inning.
Offensively, the Bruins were missing the timely hit throughout the game, loading the bases in the first inning with two hits and a hit-by-pitch, but were unable to push a runner across. The Bruins would not have another runner reach second base until Zaplatosch doubled with two outs in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Natasha Watley recorded a two-out bunt single and stole second base, but was stranded when DePaul third baseman Katy Kukman snagged a line-drive foul ball hit by Caitlin Benyi.
The Bruins return to action at 1 pm in the final game of the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic against host Fresno State.
