No. 10 Softball Finishes Third At The NIST

March 9, 2003

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Kara Brun's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the 10th-ranked Arizona State softball team (21-7) to a 1-0 win over Santa Clara to finish in third place at the National Invitational Softball Tournament.

Brun led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a count of 1-2 against Bronco's starter Jamie Forman-Lau, but her next pitch was right down the middle as Brun crushed it over the left centerfield fence for the game winner. Desiree Serrano (13-4) limited the Broncos to only three hits with seven strikeouts for her fifth shutout on the year.

ASU will play Sacramento State in an out of bracket game at 12:00 p.m. The game will not count towards the stands, just the team's overall records.

Up next, the Devil have a short rest and then head back out on the road for the KIA Klassic Tournament in Fullerton, California, Thursday, March 13 through Sunday, March 16. ASU will open pool play against Oklahoma on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. and Cal State Northridge at 1:00 p.m. (PT).
