No. 17 Softball Tops No. 24 Minnesota, 3-1

March 9, 2003

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Senior Shelly Prochaska's two-RBI single in the first inning helped propel the No. 17 ranked Oregon State softball team to a 3-1 victory against No. 24 Minnesota in Sunday's consolation final at the National Invitational Softball Tournament.

The win was the second in a week for the Beavers (19-9) against the Gophers (12-7-1).

Oregon State scored all three of its runs in the first inning, utilizing three hits in the frame. Clare Burnum led-off the game with a double and Kelly Petersen drew one-out walk to setup Prochaska's two-RBI single. Steph Adams followed with a single that plated Prochaska to give the Beavers their final run.

Minnesota got on the board in the third inning, taking advantage of a pair of hits. Veronica Roberts eventually crossed the plate on a wild pitch, but that was all of the scoring the Gophers would get.

'It was a good win against a good team,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Our pitching staff did a great job, all three players threw well. Amy (Klever) did a tremendous job shutting them down at the end of the game.'

All three Beaver pitchers saw action on the day. Dena DuBois started the contest before being relieved in the third inning by Monica Hoffman and freshman Amy Klever entered the circle in the fifth to close out the contest.

Hoffman was credited with the win to improve to 13-5 on the season.

Prochaska provided the bulk of the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. The senior catcher finished the five-game tournament with a .467 batting average (7-for-15) and seven RBI. Burnum and freshman Vanessa Iapala each doubled in the contest.

'Overall it was a very solid weekend,' said Walker. 'Defensively I thought it was our best tournament of the season. Kelly Petersen and Clare Burnum both had some outstanding plays on defense and Shelly Prochaska had a great weekend for us offensively.'

The Beavers return to action on Saturday with their home-opener against in-state rival University of Oregon. The Civil War contest also marks the Pac-10 opener for both squads. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex.
