Head Coach Mike Montgomery Named Co-Coach of the Year in the Pac-10
March 10, 2003
Walnut Creek, Ca - Mike Montgomery, who directed the Stanford Cardinal men's basketball team to a 23-7 record and a second place finish (14-4) in the Pac-10, was named on Monday as Pacific-10 Co-Coach of the Year along with Arizona's Lute Olson.
Montgomery captures his third coach of the year honor after guiding the Cardinal to a current #14 national ranking. After losing two All Pac-10 performers (Curtis Borchardt, Casey Jacobsen) early to the NBA, Stanford was selected to finish seventh in the Pac-10. Instead, Montgomery led the Cardinal to a 14-4 Pac-10 record and their ninth consecutive 20-win season.
Julius Barnes, Stanford's senior point-guard, was named to the ten-member 2003 All Pacific-10 Conference first team. Barnes is Stanford's leading scorer (15.7 ppg) and also ranks first in free throw percentage (.829) and assists (113). The other nine All Pac-10 selections are Ike Diogu (Arizona State), Jason Gardner (Arizona), Luke Jackson (Oregon), Jason Kapono (UCLA), Philip Ricci (Oregon State), Luke Ridnour (Oregon), Joe Shipp (California), Amit Tamir (California) and Luke Walton (Arizona). Ridnour was named Pac-10 Player of the Year.
