Freshman Crashes Waves With Two-Homer Performance
March 11, 2003
MALIBU, Calif. - Jeff Clement went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI Tuesday and the USC Trojans defeated the Pepperdine Waves, 9-6, in non-conference action at Eddy D. Field Stadium. It was the third time this season that Clement has hit two home runs in a game (Feb. 14 and 15 vs. South Alabama). He leads the Trojans this season in home runs (10) and RBI (20).
USC improved to 10-10 overall and snapped Pepperdine's eight-game home winning streak as the Waves fell to 10-6 on the season.
With two outs in the top of the first, senior shortstop Anthony Lunetta doubled to right before Clement deposited a 1-1 pitch over the right field fence for a 2-0 lead. USC had runners at first and second with no outs in the fourth and fifth innings, but could not convert on either opportunity and Pepperdine took advantage.
Cory Brightwell put the Waves on the board in the fourth with an RBI single. With two outs in the fifth, David Uribes singled and moved Nelson Caraballo to second. Both runners advanced on a Rummonds' wild pitch and on a 2-2 pitch, first baseman Ty Harper hit a two-run single to center to put the Waves ahead by a 3-2 score.
The Trojans finally broke through in the sixth. Jon Brewster singled on an 0-2 pitch to center to load the bases with one out. Pinch hitter Darin Vieira tied the game with a single to center and back-to-back singles by Matt Bonovich and pinch hitter Dale Legaspi produced two more runs. Travis McAndrews completed the four-run inning when he reached on an RBI fielder's choice.
In the seventh, Lunetta lead off with his fourth homer of the season to left, followed by Clement, who hit a 3-2 pitch off Robert Hobbs to right center for his second homer.
