Allen Simms Named Indoor Track And Field Athlete Of The Year For Western Region

March 12, 2003

Sophomore Allen Simms has been named the West Regional Athlete of the Year for indoor track and field, the U.S. Track Coaches Association announced today.

Simms, who transferred to USC from George Mason this past fall, won both the long jump and the triple jump at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 16. His best of 55-5 in the triple jump is the NCAA's top mark to date.

Both Simms and his teammate--senior Julien Kapek--will be competing in the triple jump at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. on March 14. Kapek has a best of 53-2 1/4 this season indoors.

Both are also stars outdoors, as Simms has a nation-leading 26-3 3/4 in the long jump and Kapek is coming off a season in which he finished third in the triple jump at the 2002 NCAA Championships (he is also USC's school record holder with a mark of 55-8 1/2).
