Matt Gentry Earns NCAA Bid

March 12, 2003

Stanford, Calif. - Wrestler Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) will head to the NCAA Championships on March 20-22 in Kansas City, Missouri.

The 157-pound sophomore finished 6th at the Pac-10 Championships earlier this month but was named the first alternate for the conference. Boise State announced the injury of one of its athletes today and Gentry was given the spot.

Gentry compiled a 28-8 record this season and a 12-0 dual record. He is the Cardinal's win-leader for the second straight season and has compiled 63 wins in his career. As a redshirt freshman last season, Gentry placed second at the Pac-10 Tournament to earn his first trip to Nationals at 149 pounds.

In 2002, Gentry posted a 1-2 record at the NCAA Championships and was named to the Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie Team. He was also named the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year.

The 2003 NCAA Championships will be hosted by the Big 12 Conference and the Kansas City Sports Commission. The three-day tournament will be held in Kemper Arena on March 20-22. For ticket and schedule information, please refer to the official NCAA website at
