March 12, 2003
Walnut Creek, Calif. - Stanford junior hurler Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 3-March 9, Commissioner Ton Hansen announced today. Sorensen led the Cardinal to a second place finish in the 24-team Speedline Invitational last weekend.
Sorensen went a perfect 4-0 at the Speedline, picking up wins over Western Michigan, No. 22 South Florida, Pacific and fourth-ranked Washington. She finished the weekend with 59 strikeouts in 29.1 innings, and allowed only five hits and one earned run. Sorensen collected 14 of those strikeouts in pitching a one-hit upset of the Huskies, 3-1 in the semifinal game.
For her efforts last weekend, she was also named the Speedline Invitational's Most Valuable Pitcher. The 11th-ranked Cardinal (21-7) had a 7-1 weekend at the Invitational in Plant City, Fla.
This is Sorensen's fourth POW honor. Arizona State's junior shortstop Kara Brun was named the conference's Player of the Week, marking her second weekly honor, and helping the Sun Devils go 5-1 over the weekend at the NIST.
