Giuliana Mendiola Named Finalist For Kodak All-America Team

March 13, 2003

ATLANTA, Ga. - Washington junior guard Giuliana Mendiola has been named a finalist for the 2003 NCAA Division I Kodak/WBCA All-America Women's Basketball Team, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and the Eastman Kodak Company announced Wednesday.

Mendiola is one of six honorable mention finalists from Region 8, a list that also includes Michelle Greco (UCLA), Ebony Hoffman (USC), Shawntinice Polk (Arizona), Nichole Powell (Stanford) and Lindsay Taylor (UC Santa Barbara). WBCA member coaches of the Kodak/WBCA All-America Selection Committee in each of the eight regions select the All-America team. The national Kodak All-America team will be announced on April 4.

Mendiola, Washington's leader in scoring (17.3), rebounding (6.7) and assists (5.4), was also named the 2003 Pac-10 Player of the Year, the first Husky ever to earn that distinction. She earned conference Player of the Week three times this season, also the first Husky to accomplish the feat. She also earned All-Pac-10 honors for the second-straight season as well. Mendiola led Washington to its first 20-win regular season record under head coach June Daugherty. UW has an overall record of 22-7 and a Pac-10 record of 13-5.

A second-year team captain, Mendiola has scored in double-figures in all but three games this season, while recording eight double-doubles. For good measure, she has scored at least 20 points in eight of the last 11 games.

Mendiola set a single-game school-record with 43 points vs. UCLA, Feb. 1, the highest output in the Pac-10 this year and sixth-best in the nation to date. With that performance, Mendiola became the first UW player to score at least 40 points in a single game. She also equaled the Washington single-game assists record with 13 against Oregon State, Jan. 25.

The Huskies await their postseason fate when the NCAA Championship selections are made Sunday, March 16, at 2 p.m. PST. The NCAA Selection Show will be televised live by ESPN. NCAA first-round games will be played, Sat., March 22, or Sun., March 23, depending upon site.
