March 14, 2003

SEATTLE - The Washington women's soccer team plays seven exhibition games this spring, including a mid-April home game at Husky Soccer Field. The Huskies use the spring season to prepare for the 2003 regular season that begins August 29 at home against Maryland in the inaugural Arena Sports Pac-10/ACC Challenge.

The spring session started Feb. 27 with a 1-0 win over the Canadian Under-19 National Team in Eugene, Ore.

The remaining six spring outings all take place during April, beginning Saturday, April 5 at the Nike Campus in Beaverton, Ore. Washington plays back-to-back games that day, meeting Washington State at 9 a.m. and Oregon at 4 p.m.

The Huskies travel to meet reigning NCAA champion Portland on Saturday, April 12 at Merlo Field. The Pilots visit Husky Soccer Field during the regular season for a game on Sept. 26. Portland features Canadian National Team forward Christine Sinclair, the 2002 collegiate player of the year.

On Saturday, April 19 Washington entertains Portland State at 11 a.m. The Vikings are coached by former Husky standout player Tara Bilanski. UW school scoring leader Tami Bennett is an assistant coach at PSU.

The Huskies close out the spring campaign with consecutive game in Pullman against Washington State. The cross-state rivals clash on Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27.

Washington returns 14 letterwinners from last season's team that was snubbed by the NCAA Tournament committee despite posting a 9-8-3 record against one of the nation's most difficult schedules. Seven of the Huskies' eight defeats came against teams that were listed in the final rankings, including five setbacks versus teams listed in the top 10. Washington played 11 games against opponents that received NCAA Tournament berths.

Twelve of the top 13 scorers return from last year's UW team, led by Melissa Bennett who shattered the school's single-season assist record. Bennett led the Pac-10 with 18 assists and also topped all conference players in total points with a school single-season record 34.

Coach Lesle Gallimore enters her 10th year this fall, having guided the Huskies to six NCAA Touranment berths in her first nine seasons.
