Trojans Homer Way To 3-2 Win Over No. 5 Cal State Fullerton

March 14, 2003

LOS ANGELES - Senior David Gordon led off the eighth with a home run to center on the first pitch Friday and the USC Trojans defeated the No. 5 Cal State Fullerton Titans, 3-2, in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. Freshman Bobby Paschal struck out 12 batters in a no-decision for the Trojans while freshman catcher Jeff Clement hit his 11th home run of the season.

USC improves to 11-10 overall while Cal State Fullerton falls to 17-4 on the season.

Freshman Michael Cooper (1-0) earned his first collegiate win in relief while Jordan Olson, who made his first appearance after being suspended for violation of team rules, earned his first save with a scoreless inning. With runners at second and third with one out, Olson struck out pinch hitter P.J. Pilittere and designated hitter David Fischer to end the game.

Jason Windsor (3-1) took the loss for Cal State Fullerton, allowing three runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Windsor was a replacement for Fullerton ace Wes Littleton, who was suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules.

Paschal went seven innings for the Trojans, allowing one run (unearned) on three hits with no walks and 12 strikeouts. The freshman left-hander struck out three batters in a row three times, including the seventh inning where he struck out the side.

The Titans took the lead in the second when Fischer reached on a catcher's interference against USC's Jeff Clement with two outs. Fischer stole second and scored on an RBI single by first baseman Richie Burgos.

Clement made up for the mistake in the bottom of the seventh. On a 1-2 pitch from Windsor, Clement hammered a solo shot to right. First baseman Joey Metropoulos followed with a bloop double to right. He advanced on a sacrifice and scored on a ground ball double play by Darin Vieira.

Fischer scored the second run for the Titans in the eighth on a single to left by catcher Kurt Suzuki before Gordon led off the bottom of the eighth with his fifth homer of the season off the top of the fence in center.

USC and Cal State Fullerton will continue the series tomorrow at Edison International Field, home of the world champion Anaheim Angels, at 4 p.m. If the game is rained out, both teams will play on Monday (March 17) at 7 p.m. Sunday's game is still set for a 1 p.m. start at Dedeaux Field.
