No. 10 Beavers Lose To No. 22 Brigham Young

March 15, 2003

PROVO, Utah - The No. 10 Oregon State gymnastics team had to count three falls as the Beavers lost to No. 22 Brigham Young at Smith Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars defeated OSU 196.775-195.325 in the Beavers' final dual meet of the year.

'I'm disappointed. I don't want to make any excuses. I think this is the worst meet we've had all year,' coach Tanya Chaplin said.

Chrissy Lamun had the highest score of the meet for either team, posting a career-high 9.95 on floor to win the event for the fourth time this year. Angela Morales had career-highs on all three of her events, placing second on floor (9.925), second on vault (9.90) and third on beam (9.85). Megan Jones set a new career-high on vault with a 9.90, and Thrse Videan equaled her personal-best with a 9.90 on that same event.

Despite those career-highs, the Beavers had to count two falls on beam and another on vault as OSU finished with its lowest score since the second meet of the year.

'We were lacking energy and team unity today. Nobody was fighting for anything,' said Lamun. 'Usually when we're in the locker room before a meet, we're all fired up ready to go. Today we were just sitting in there. A lot of people were sick, but that's not their fault.

OSU opened with a six-for-six effort on bars, highlighted by a pair of 9.85 marks from Tanya Ricioli and Elizabeth Jillson. Nelson added a 9.825, and with Videan and Jones both scoring 9.80s, the Beavers posted a 49.125 on their first event.

BYU took the early lead after scoring 49.275 on vault, with Tricia Ashton winning the event with a 9.925. Jamie Mabray chipped in a 9.90, and Lindsay Butterfield scored 9.875 for the Cougars.

Three Beavers had career-highs of 9.90 on vault to tie for second, but OSU also had to count a fall on the event for the first time this year. Morales and Videan tied their career-highs on their handspring pike half vaults, while Jones had her 9.90 on a yurchenko full, improving on her previous career high of 9.85. Nelson scored 9.875, but Heather Justus and Ricioli both fell, forcing the Beavers to count Ricioli's 9.40 to finish with a 48.975.

Led by Butterfield's first-place 9.90 on bars, the Cougars scored a 48.950 to maintain the lead at the halfway point, 98.225-98.100.

OSU's freshmen turned in the team's top scores on floor, with Lamun leading the Beavers with a career-high 9.95 and Morales tying her own personal best of 9.925. It was Ricioli, though, who had the most notable routine of the rotation. Ricioli's music gave out just as she finished her first tumbling pass, but she continued the routine and scored a 9.90 despite the lack of music. Along with Justus' 9.825 and Nelson's 9.80, the Beavers ended up with a 49.400 to equal their season-high.

The 49.400 also was enough to put the Beavers on top heading into the final event. BYU scored a 49.200 on beam, led by Ashton's 9.925, but OSU took the 147.500-147.425 leading with one rotation remaining.

The lead didn't last long, however, as OSU had several falls on beam while BYU hit six-for-six on floor, with three scores of 9.90 or better. Morales led the Beavers with a career-high 9.85 to tie for third. Lamun had a 9.775, and Ricioli added a 9.75, but the other three Beavers fell. OSU had to count Nelson's 9.275 and Elaine Yoder's 9.175.

OSU has next week off for finals and will return to action at the Pacific-10 Championships on March 29 at UCLA.
