March 15, 2003
Oklahoma City, Okla. - Stanford's McKenze Murphy earned a spot in the NCAA Championships on the final day of the NCAA Zone E Diving Meet at the Oklahoma City Community College Pool. Murphy finished fifth in the platform after placing fourth in the three-meter and eighth in the one-meter on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Murphy will join teammate Ashlee Rosenthal, who finished second in the one-meter and third in the three-meter, as Stanford's two representatives at the NCAA Championships hosted by Auburn March 20-22. Rosenthal did not participate in the platform on Saturday.
USC's Blythe Hartley won Saturday's platform competition to sweep all three events.
The top eight women's divers at the Zone E Meet advanced to the NCAA Championships. The non-Stanford qualifiers are Daniela Bemme (Arizona), Claire Febvay (Arizona), Nicci Fusaro (USC), Regan Gosnell (UCLA), Hartley and Trisha Tumlinson (Arizona State).
'We're really happy that both Ashlee (Rosenthal) and McKenze (Murphy) have qualifed for the NCAA's,' said Stanford head diving coach Dr. Rick Schavone. 'There will be high expectations on Ashlee at a national meet for the first time, but I think she will handle it very well. McKenze is a seasoned competitior, and we will be looking for a good performance from her.
