Trojans Hammer Out 12-4 Win At San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore first baseman Joey Metropoulos went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI Tuesday and the USC Trojans defeated the San Diego Toreros, 12-4, in non-conference action at Cunningham Stadium. Jon Brewster also went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI for the Trojans.
USC improves to 12-11 overall while San Diego falls to 11-16 on the season.
Jordon Olson (1-0) pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits to earn the win. Jon Williams made his first appearance in over a month after being sidelined with a right elbow injury and pitched a perfect first inning. Brett Gillespie (0-1) took the loss for San Diego, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
The Trojans scored in the second when Metropoulos was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a groundout by Travis McAndrews, went to third on a wild pitch by Gillespie and scored on an RBI double by second baseman Jon Brewster. Brewster scored on a two-base throwing error by USD third baseman Erik Verdugo for the second run of the inning.
San Diego loaded the bases in the second and scored its lone run on a groundout by shortstop Jose Ortega, scoring first baseman Lucas Wennersten.
USC shortstop Anthony Lunetta doubled down the left field line in the fourth, followed by a walk to catcher Jeff Clement. Metropoulos hit his fifth homer of the season to left on a 2-0 pitch for a 5-1 USC lead. The Trojans broke the game open with three runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
USC will open Pac-10 Conference play this weekend at Arizona, beginning on Friday (March 21) at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's game will start at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
