Brian Anderson Ties Arizona's Single-Season Hitting Streak Record As Arizona Downs New Mexico, 8-3

March 19, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz.- Junior Brian Anderson tied Arizona's longest single-season hitting streak as the No. 20-ranked Wildcats defeated New Mexico for the 19th-straight time, 8-3, at Frank Sancet Field on Wednesday. The victory was Arizona's seventh straight win and improved its record to 19-7 for the season, while the Lobos fell to 16-9 for the season.

Anderson, who entered the game with a 24-game hitting streak, wasted little time in tying Ernie Durazo's two-year old single-season record with a hard hit RBI triple to center field in the bottom of the first that gave Arizona an early 1-0 advantage. The junior added a double in the bottom of the fourth for a 2 for 4, two-run day at the plate.

The Wildcats scored two in the first, three in fourth and three in the sixth to pull away from the Lobos, who have not defeated Arizona since 1997.

In addition to Anderson's outstanding day at the plate, freshman Nick Hundley chipped in with two hits and two runs scored, while classmate Lee Franklin finished 2 for 3 with a run scored in place of the injured starter Moises Duran.

On the mound, freshman John Meloan (2-0) held the Lobo bats in check with six innings of one-hit work. The first-year Wildcat struck out four and walked two en route to his second win of the season.

New Mexico starter Joe Salas (0-2) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs in just three innings of work.

Now at 25 consecutive games, Anderson needs at least one hit in all three of Arizona's upcoming games against two-time defending Pac-10 champs USC this weekend to tie the all-time school record hitting streak of 28, which is shared by Durazo and Jack Daugherty.

First pitch for Arizona's Pac-10 opening game against the Trojans is set for 7 p.m. on Friday. KNST (790-AM) will broadcast the game live on the radio.
